Checking Accessibility in Moodle Just Got Easier

Have you ever wished you could check accessibility easily at the point of creation in a Moodle course? It’s now possible with a brand new upgrade to our Brickfield tool in Moodle, which has been rebranded as Brickfield Enable.

When creating or editing content using the text editor anywhere in Moodle, selecting or clicking on the accessibility button on the editor toolbar (see screenshot below with button highlighted) will activate Brickfield Enable, which will check the content in the text editor for accessibility errors. Using this feature anytime you are editing content is the most efficient and proactive way to ensure your Moodle content is accessible.

A sidebar opens when the accessibility button is clicked (see screenshot).

In the example shown, content in the text editor contains five issues, each listed in a separate box. The “View” button in an issue’s box will jump the cursor to or select the content in the text editor where the issue is located. The “Fix” button opens a pop-up window where the error can be fixed before publishing the content. You can find more information about the error using the info button at the top right of each error.

Examples of two windows where issues can be fixed are below. First is the “Fix” window for missing alt text which reads, “Describe this image” and provides a place to enter alt text. It also provides a “Mark as decorative” button.

Next is the “Fix” window for text styled as heading without heading element. It reads, “This text appears to be a heading. Choose the correct heading level.” A drop-down menu allows for selecting the correct heading.

In addition to this exciting new capability, the interface for Brickfield reporting and wizards (used to double-check accessibility of your whole course) has been updated to a much more easily navigable working space.

Brickfield Enable is a powerful tool to help us with our continued commitment to ensuring we meet required federal digital accessibility standards by the April 2027 deadline. Full details are in DELTA’s User Guide for Brickfield Enable.
