Fundamentals First

Before you dive in to the resources below, be sure you understand the basics, which all work together to help us create an accessible digital environment.

Images

  • Add alt text that is short, descriptive and provides context for images. No need to start with “Image of” or “Picture of.”
  • When writing alt text, consider what about the image is vital for someone to know if they can’t see it.
  • Avoid or limit text on images. If there is text on the image, include it in the alt text or caption.

Example

NC State Instagram post showing a recent graduate sitting in Carter Finley.

  • Potential Alt Text: A student athlete alum sits smiling in Carter-Finley Stadium while wearing a graduation cap.

Videos

When creating captions and narration, consider — can you close your eyes and understand the purpose of the video?

Captions

NC State and CHASS Instagram post shows Jesse Eisenberg with the caption "I cannot wait to come to campus on September 18th."

  • Include captions in all videos to display dialogue or other sounds. This makes it accessible to people who can’t hear all of the audio.
  • While most platforms have auto captions, they are not always accurate — double check them.
  • Ensure there is enough color contrast between captions and the video background.

Narration

  • If your video includes visual-only information, upload an audio description or add a descriptive transcript to the caption.

Text

  • Use only standard fonts.
  • Limit the use of emojis, especially in the middle of a sentence.
  • Limit the use of hashtags and include them at the end of posts. Capitalize the first letter of each word — for example: #ThinkAndDo.
